Manage Variants in Shopify
Learn how to manage product variants, SKUs, and grind options in your Shopify store
When you sync Roastify products to Shopify, each product can have multiple variants based on grind type. This guide explains how to manage these variants in your Shopify store.
Understanding Variants
Roastify products typically come in two main variants:
Whole Bean
Original coffee beans, perfect for home grinding and maximum freshness
Pre-Ground
Ready-to-brew coffee, ground to ideal specifications
Each product variant comes with its own unique SKU identifier in the Roastify system.

How Variants Work
When a Roastify product syncs to Shopify:
- Variants are created automatically - Both Whole Bean and Ground variants are added
- SKUs are assigned - Each variant gets a unique SKU for inventory tracking
- Inventory is managed by Roastify - Stock levels sync automatically
Each variant has a unique SKU (Stock Keeping Unit). SKUs cannot be duplicated across variants.
Adding Variants in Shopify
If you need to add a variant that wasn't synced automatically:
Access your product in Shopify admin
Click "Add Variant" in the variants section
Enter variant details:
- Title (grind type)
- Price
- SKU (critically important - must match Roastify)
- Select "Roastify" for inventory management

SKU Format Requirements
SKU Format Requirements:
- Use uppercase letters
- Include dashes between parts
- Follow the pattern:
COF-GND-12O-RCK-BOXorCOF-WHB-12O-RCK-BOX - GND = Ground, WHB = Whole Bean
The SKU format encodes important information:
COF- Product type (coffee)GNDorWHB- Grind type (Ground or Whole Bean)12O- Size (12oz)RCK- Coffee codeBOX- Packaging type
Removing Variants in Shopify
You might want to remove a variant if:
- Your packaging specifically shows one grind type
- You only want to offer one option
- You're simplifying your product lineup
Navigate to Products in your Shopify admin
Open your product editor
Find and delete unwanted variants

While Roastify maintains variant records, you can modify how they appear in your Shopify store. For example, remove the "Ground" variant if your packaging specifically shows "Whole Bean".
Best Practices
Keep SKUs Consistent
- Never manually change the SKU after it's set
- If you need a different SKU, delete and recreate the variant
- SKU mismatches will cause inventory sync issues
Consider Your Packaging
- If your label says "Whole Bean", consider removing the Ground variant
- Customers may be confused if the variant doesn't match the packaging
Price Variants Appropriately
- You can set different prices for different variants in Shopify
- Ground coffee sometimes costs slightly more due to processing
- Keep pricing consistent with your brand strategy
Troubleshooting
"Variant not syncing inventory"
- Verify the SKU matches exactly in both Roastify and Shopify
- Check that inventory management is set to "Roastify"
- Wait 5-10 minutes for sync to complete
- Contact support if issues persist
"Wrong variant showing"
- Check your variant titles in Shopify
- Ensure the correct variant is set as default
- Verify the product images match the variants
